ITA Championship Lead & US Touring Car Debut

Continuing success from the 2013 season, Geri Amani has been charging ahead within the SCCA San Francisco Region Improved Touring championship (ITA), maintaining a firm lead on points for 2014. In a class where more performance modifications are allowed, Amani continues to run in her division in Spec Miata trim.

Running the #39 Redlign AutoSports / ROARR Motorsports Miata, Amani has consistently finished in the top-3—often running against close competition, some of which are vehicles with bigger displacement and a greater performance advantage. Amani continues to showcase her talent despite the troubles that arise on track, as well as the many logistical and financial limitations.

“My approach has been pretty simple—keep the car safe, so by the end of the year we’re in a position to take the top spot in the championship. But with so much crashing happening, you really have to be dialed-in to what’s happening around you to make it for the long haul. But that’s where good driving comes in.”

Amani’s efforts this year have not gone unrecognized. At the end of July, Amani was invited to drive in the US Touring Car Championship running the TNI Racing / SanDisk Mazdaspeed3. In this completely unfamiliar platform, her debut was nothing short of a true success. Surprising series officials and competitors with her first time in the car and the series, she ran a close chase for 3rd place, but ultimately finished 4th.

While she barely missed a podium spot in her USTCC debut, she was awarded the “SWIFT Move of the Race” award for near miss with a fellow competitor who lost control of his car, which ultimately became a maneuver that had everyone watching.

“We all had a great weekend, both the team and the SanDisk corporate guests.” Amani explained. “The team didn’t know what to expect from me since I was so new to all of them, but they were very surprised and very happy with the results. I knew driving smart would secure a good result, making it easy to return the car to the team the way I found it. Minus some tire-wear, brakes and fuel of course. In my opinion, that’s always winning!”

Continuing the 2014 season, Amani jumped back into the #39 Redlign AutoSports / ROARR Motorsports Miata for the Sonoma Sprints Double Regional at Sonoma Raceway. At arguably one of the most challenging race tracks in the country, the weekend proved to be an enormous success for Amani, securing two poles and two wins for the weekend. In addition to her first double-win event, on average Amani maintained a 2-3 second lead ahead of her closest competitor, who was also her challenger in points for the Improved Touring Championship.

Amani has two more events that will ultimately determine her success in the 2014 Championship. Next up on the calendar is the SFR Championship Series Double Regional at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (September 12-14) and the Thunderhill Rewards Championship Regional at Thunderhill Raceway (November 8-9).
